This post is over due but I wanted to say thanks to the awesome crew that made this marvelous event happen, educators and sponsors, and share a few snapshots of this incredibly inspiring experience, Edcamp Murrieta. Edcamps are free PD, thanks to the sponsor's generous donations, and I believe it's true, you get what you put into it. Christina Lee and I enjoyed the event very much and feel like we had some great take aways. I personally feel like I have more to learn about Chromebooks because the newer devices have come a long way over the past two years since I researched them. Thanks Miguel Guhlin for sharing some resources that compare models, here. With California Common Core State Standards online testing starting in 3rd grade, you cannot help but look at this affordable device to get the job done. In our district we are trying iPads with an attached keyboard. I'll keep you posted on how it goes this Spring.

Multi-Media iPad Creation Using the Dynamic Discovery Education Build a Board Tool - Video, Audio, Images, Text - A Recipe for the Best Poster Ever!

Oh Joy! I have waited for so long and am thrilled to have had the chance to create a Glogster-like poster using the iPad's Discovery Educuation build a board tool. Thanks for sharing this amazing resource Laura Moore, Tool of the Month: Board Builder.

*Note: The tool is amazing but you need fast wifi or students will get frustrated. The day I presented it our wifi was slow and most of the 5th graders abandoned this application and opted for Keynote or Popplet to finish their explorer's assignment. The beauty here is that kids have choices and they do appreciate it just like adults!

iPads in a First Grade Reading Center Surpass My Expectations

2/23/2014

Reading is the most important skill for a child to be successful in school from my personal experience. But how can you make it super fun to inspire kids to want to read more? Introduce the iPad. I am a huge fan of the 1-1 iPad classroom in grades three through eight. To best use limited funds, I believe that for the earliest grades, Pre-Kinder through 2nd grade, a set of 5-8 iPads is invaluable. This month I got the wonderful opportunity to help setup a small first grade group focused on reading - reading to self or reading along. These little tikes are enormously entertaining and remind me how to have fun. Here's a few photos I took to capture and share the learning.

The reading center included writing a two or more sentences. In the students' reading journals they entered the date and the following:
Today I listened to _________.
One thing I learned was __________.
The more advance students continued to write additional sentences and provide details. Really really nice job by all the students.
